Looking hot in lisbon

Okay, so maybe travelling to Lisbon at the end of July, in a heat wave, was not well thought out. I look hot – and not in a good way.

I am currently staying in a great little apartment in the Alfama district of Lisbon… and it has A/C! (Whew!) It is also right on the Tram 28 line, so it can be a little noisy. But that is part of the charm of this old section of the city. And I am guaranteed to hit my step goals as I wander the steep cobble stone streets – my consumption of the national pastry, pastel de nata, makes this a requirement unless I want to buy a new wardrobe one size larger. These custard tarts are all settling into my posterior section.

I spent the morning exploring Alfama; buying bread in one shop, milk and cheese at another (Still haven’t run into that elusive wine shop), taking photos and losing all track of time. But it has reached 30 degrees Celsius by early afternoon and still heating up. Even shade doesn’t give much relief and my cotton sundress is beginning to stick to my body in really unflattering ways. So, a cold lunch on a shaded terrace is in order and I will then make like a local and head inside for a siesta until early evening.

Lisbon is a great destination for a solo traveler. Good transit, walkable, friendly people and truly beautiful. I booked 5 nights here, and I am already a bit sorry that I didn’t book a longer stay. A day trip to Sinta is a must if you have the time.

Tonight – Fado!
