the selfie dilemma

One of pains about travelling solo (right behind trying to cram yourself and your pack into an airport bathroom stall) is getting that photo of yourself during your travels. Yes, the dreaded Selfie.

I am one of those women who simply cannot take a good selfie. Period. So I tried to follow all the tips found after Googling “How to take a good selfie”.

TIP 1 – know your good side. I have a good side? Okay. So I took a dozen shots of all sides. Crap… I hit burst. I now had 250 photos of me, and I scanned each one, looking for ONE good one. Nope. Nada.

TIP 2 -Place the camera to the side. Yup, there are the jowls in all their technicolor splendor. Beautiful. Not.

TIP 3 – Make your neck look longer by pushing your face forward. Lovely pic of my chin fat, stretched out to look longer to merge into the turkey neck.

TIP 4 – Open your mouth seductively and exhale. Ha ha ha ha – try it. Seriously. See what happens to your eyes. Looking like a few too many glasses of wine happened.

TIP 5 – Find your perfect head/phone tilt combination. WHAT? Sigh. Worth a try. Well, double crap and a half. I somehow did another burst and now have 500 really, truly bad selfies.

TIP 6 – Edit, Edit, Edit. I am into photography and have some experience with editing, so I gave it a try. I took one shot with the daffy duck lips, seductive eyes, camera held high, face turned and shoulder raised. I should note that after all the posing, I missed the shutter three times, and had to reconfigure the pose again and again. I then used every editing tool on my Android photo app. Blur. Enhance. Soften. Lighten. Darken. Eyes. Lips. I really wish I had not immediately deleted it. It would have made a great head shot if I ever wanted to be a stand-in for a horror movie.

TIP 7 – If you try the other tips, practice in the safety of your own home or hotel. Do NOT do it in front of someplace life the Taj Mahal. Tic Toc material for a youngster with a twisted sense of humor. (Or me – evil grin)

And now for TIP 8. My favorite. Take a photo of you photo’ing yourself! Keep an eye out for those stunning mirrors and spots with great reflections. Oh – and stand tall, suck in and remember that those camera/duffle/day bags can be nice camouflage over the bumpy parts.
